Seattle Magazine's - Washington Wine Awards: "2015 Vineyard of the Year"

Les Collines Vineyard (French for ‘the foothills’) is situated in the Walla Walla Valley Appellation, reaching elevations from 1,140 to 1,370 feet. This 290-acre vineyard is renowned for its sustainable farming practices and high-quality fruit production.

Sustainable Practices

Les Collines is a leader in minimal input farming, focusing on environmental stewardship. The vineyard is LIVE certified and recognized as a Salmon Safe Vineyard. They practice integrated pest management, water conservation, and use cover crops and compost to enhance soil health.

Soil and Geography

The vineyard's soils consist mainly of Walla Walla Silt Loam, with some areas of Athena Silt Loam. These nutrient-rich soils, originating from ancient glacial deposits, provide excellent drainage and are ideal for viticulture.

Environmental Stewardship

Les Collines is committed to being a good neighbor and steward of the land. They avoid herbicides, practice fair-wage compensation, and support the Riparian Area Restoration Project, promoting biodiversity.

Certifications and Recognition

Internationally certified for Sustainable Farming by the IOBC, Les Collines was also named Seattle Magazine’s Washington Wine Awards 2015 Vineyard of the Year. Their state-certified nursery focuses on clone experiments and propagation.

Varietals Grown

Varietals include Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Tempranillo, Zinfandel, Viognier, and Riesling.

Climate and Viticulture

The vineyard's climate is influenced by its elevation and proximity to the Blue Mountains. It experiences cooler afternoons, warmer mornings, and an average of 19-21 inches of precipitation annually, creating optimal growing conditions with minimal irrigation needs.

Geological Insights

The geology of Les Collines features Columbia River Basalt bedrock, overlain by basalt cobblestone gravels and nutrient-rich loess. This unique terroir is studied by Dr. Kevin Pogue, a leading expert in terroir and recipient of the Washington State Wine Commission's Walter Clore Honorarium.
